If you’re undertaking a renovation project, landscaping your garden or simply having a clear-out, you may find yourself with a lot of waste to dispose of. This is where a skip hire service comes in. Skip hire is the process of hiring a large metal container, known as a skip, for storing rubbish until it can be taken away for disposal by a skip hire company such as WEM Skips.

You can put a variety of rubbish in a skip, including wood, metal, furniture, plastic, drywall, concrete, clothing, bottles, tiles, and garden waste.

For hardcore skips, you can put in bricks, concrete, rubble and stones, however, we would recommend to not load these skips full of hardcore waste above 8 tonnes for an 8 yard skip as transportation back to depot will require some of the waste to be removed.

Waste items which can’t be thrown into a skip include televisions, gas cylinders, explosives, electrical equipment, batteries, any kind of oil, asbestos, paint and glue, laptops, phones, lighting, tyres, chemicals such as pesticides and solvents, medical waste, and large appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators which you may wish to recycle.

As you can see, there are many waste items that cannot be placed in a skip due to their hazardous nature, size, or them not meeting waste management regulatory restrictions. It is important to properly dispose of these items to protect the environment and the public.

A skip permit is needed for all skips placed on public road, footpath or verge outside your house. You can usually obtain a skip permit from your your local council, however, dependent on your location we are confident we can get a skip hire permit for you.

You should always make us aware before the load service that the skip is not going to on private property, it’s important to consider will the skip fit on my drive or whether you think might be suitable on your property, if it can’t, and it must go on a public road then you will need to pay extra for a permit. (The cost can differ dependant on location)

Can you put appliances and electrical equipment in a skip? Electrical devices and appliances cannot be placed in your skip.

Fridges, microwaves, electric cookers, freezers, televisions, dishwashers, and laptops are just a few of the electrical devices that are prohibited.
